Meditation

Mindfulness or Meditation is the simple, human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we're doing, without being swept away by everything around us.

What it is

Paying attention, on purpose

Mindfulness meditation asks nothing complicated of you. You sit, you turn your attention to the present moment, often the breath, and each time the mind drifts, you notice and begin again.

How to meditate, step by step

A simple sequence anyone can follow. Move through it slowly and expect your mind to wander, that's not a problem to fix, it's the very thing you're practising with.

Why practise it

What a little stillness gives back

The benefits build quietly with practice. A few minutes a day gradually changes how you meet stress, focus and feeling.

A calmer mind

Regular practice softens stress and anxiety, giving the nervous system room to settle and rest.

Alice focusing softly during meditation

Sharper focus

Training attention to return again and again strengthens concentration and clear thinking.

Alice pausing with a steady hand over the heart

Steadier emotions

A pause between feeling and reacting helps you respond with more patience and less impulse.

Better sleep

Quieting a racing mind before bed makes it easier to drift off and rest more deeply.

Watching thoughts come and go builds insight into your own habits, triggers and patterns.

Tips to keep it going

Be kind to yourself. There's no such thing as a bad sit. Every return to the breath counts.
Same time, same place. A small daily ritual makes the habit almost effortless.
Start tiny. Even one mindful minute is worthwhile. You can always grow from there.
Let go of goals. You're not chasing bliss or a blank mind; you're simply showing up and paying attention.
Notice the ordinary. Bring the same gentle attention to walking, eating or washing up during the day.
Begin again. Missed a few days? No guilt, just sit down and start once more.
