Sacred Gesture

The Language of the Hands

mudra · Sanskrit: seal, gesture, mark

In yoga and meditation, mudras are simple hand and body positions that can help guide attention, breath, and intention.
Their meanings vary across teachers, lineages, and settings.

Five families

Five ways mudras are practised

Based on common yoga teaching categories, mudras can be grouped by the part of the body that forms the gesture. Hand mudras are the most accessible; the subtler families are best learned gradually, especially when breath holds or internal locks are involved.

Why practise them

What a daily mudra gives back

Mudras are small practices with a practical purpose: they help give breathwork and meditation a clear tactile focus. These are the grounded reasons many practitioners use them.
